New Velindre Community School Opens
The new Velindre Community School opened its doors for the first time to pupils on Thursday 7th September as planned.
Located on the old Glanafan Lower School site the building has undergone extensive refurbishment and modernisation as part of an £850,000 project. The school provides a welcoming and safe environment for the designated pupils and will meet the special educational needs of this group of vulnerable young people.
Leader of Council, Derek Vaughan said, "This is a much needed facility which when up and running will help to reduce the high costs of educating young people with special needs in out of county placements."
Projected to provide significant annual expenditure savings it also provides a base for three behavioural support peripatetic staff who have relocated from other sites.
Rhoslyn Williams, the new Head has expressed his thanks to Baglan IT Centre staff, contractors and all of the Authority’s staff associated with the project for their efforts in ensuring that the school and its IT systems were operational in time for the opening day.
Rhoslyn, who has previously worked in Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil commented, "We have had some minor technical glitches but I am happy with the Managed Service systems operational throughout the school. I have previous experience of managed systems but the Neath Port Talbot model ranks highly due to its flexibility and user friendly interface."
